Understanding MC and USDOT Numbers

What these identifiers mean and how to look them up.

USDOT number

Issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), the USDOT number identifies companies for safety monitoring.

The MC (motor carrier) number reflects operating authority for for-hire interstate transportation. Brokers hold broker authority under an MC number.

Anyone can look up public records on the FMCSA SAFER system (safer.fmcsa.dot.gov) and the Licensing and Insurance site (li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov).
